One summer evening in 2020, Heather Bryant and Tyler Warnalis exhibited Farewell in the foothills of Floyd, VA. By taking Bryant’s large-scale works from a previous art show and attaching them to the side of an old school bus on the edge of a wooded area at Deerfield Farms, they transformed their campground into a living gallery. A fire was built as the sun set and the art itself was used to stoke the flames, piece by piece until nothing was left.
While the covid pandemic continues to push us all into a new paradigm, Farewell demonstrates the artists coming to terms with a life left behind while they clear space for whatever the future may hold. Although the ephemeral installation was attended by no one, it is presented here through photograph in the hopes of finding an audience who will connect with its message.
